WORKSHOPS

Saturday & Sunday @ Art & Style Ballroom,
318 Butler St., Pittsburgh PA 15223

SATURDAY

11:00am-12:00pm: Meet & Greet Bachata Foundations
“Meet” the foundations of Bachata dance steps, music, & partner work while connecting and engaging with your fellow workshop participants. If you’re already an intermediate dancer, warm up with these basics, clean up your technique, and settle back into the love of Bachata with which you are already acquainted. Don’t be fooled; all levels will benefit from this workshop.

12:15-1:15pm: Bachata Lead & Follow: Connecting from the core
In this class, we will learn to connect with our partners and initiate movement from the core while practicing Bachata rotations and transitioning between a variety of shapes found in the DR.

1:15-1:45pm:  Lunch
Bring your own or purchase the add-on for $6/day with your full pass.

1:45-2:45pm: Bachata Dance & Music: Culture, Meaning, & Styles
What is Bachata? What does it mean to you and to the Dominican Republic, its country of origin? Love or Heartbreak? Joy or the Blues? Explore these questions and many more in this multi-media lecture as Adam shares videos, photos, music & stories from over a decade researching Bachata in the DR. Be prepared to clutch your heart and feel something new as you attend this series.

3:00-4:00pm: Bachata Footwork in Social Dancing: Syncopation & Toe-Heel Step
We will learn a variety of footwork elements that utilize syncopations and toe heels, and then practice using them in a social dancing. We will also examine needed details for both lead and follows in the use of footwork.

9pm-10pm: Sensual Bachata Workshop (Terri Atkinson, Atrevidos Dance Company)

SUNDAY

11:00am-12:00pm: Hip and Body Movement for both Men & Women
Daniela breaks down body movement and hip motion for both men and women in Bachata dance. Not only is grounded body movement attractive for women, it is also very much so for men! (Rawr!) Get ready to stretch and work those fine muscles as you develop control in your hips, legs, and whole body.

12:00-1:00pm: Bachata Footwork in Social Dance: Slides and Drawing with the Feet
Learn a variety of exciting footwork that involves “drawing or sliding with the feet” and practice within a social dance situation.

1:30-2:30pm: Bachata Timing: Dancing on All Beats
Did you know that dancers in the DR may dance Bachata starting on the 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the music? This class will guide participants in being able to understand and dance on multiple beats as is common in the DR.

2:30-3:30pm: Bachata Lead & Follow: Swivel Step and Wind Shield Wiper
This is an essential lead and follow element from the DR and can be used to play, show off your partner, or to transition from open to closed or closed to open.
